A Safer Childhood: It is a RIGHT, Not a PRIVILEGE— Let's Make it Real.

“To protect a child is to protect the soul of a nation.”
Every November, our country implements a National Children's Month— a time wherein we renew our commitment to the rights, dignity, and protection of Filipino children. In this year 2025, the theme: “OSAEC-CSAEM Wakasan: Kaligtasan at Karapatan ng Bata, Ipaglaban!” seems urgent and uncompromising. Moreover, this theme reflects an ongoing crisis wherein Philippines has been identified as a global source for online sexual exploitation of children (OSAEC), with life cases inloving online abuse, grooming thought different social media platforms, and the circulation of child sexual exploitation materials (CSAEM).

‎Why are we talking about this? I mean, our country, Philippines has one of the highest numbers of online child abuse cases in the world. Many victims were very young. Some of them doesn't even know they're being abused— others can also blame poverty, easy access to phones and the lack of guidance which makes it easier for abusers and exploiters to reach children.

‎It reminds us that children nowadays face danger not just in the streets, but also online. Some people use the social media to harm kids— by stalking, asking for photos, or even sharing videos that should never be seen by children. Now, these crimes are often hidden, even facilitated by poverty and have a weak enforcement which results to unsolved issues about exploitation and to uphold danger in every child's right.

‎In order to end this exploitations and uphold every child's right to safety. The 2025 campaign requests for a unity from the government, to schools, to families, and also communities. Just like in Vigan City, the Children's Month celebration has been a call-to-action to immediately stop these crimes and cases, and also teachers teaching students how to be safe online. Barangay leaders learning how to help children who may have been a victim of online abuse. The City Social Welfare Agencies working with the enforcement to make sure that these cases, issues online are handled properly.

‎Ending OSAEC AND CSAEM means protecting the rights of children from harm, listening to their voices, and standing up for themselves wherever they are at home, in school, in their community especially, online. To truly uphold every child's safety, we must act together. Parents and guardians should always look out on their children with love and concern, checking their online activities, and let them know about the internet dangers. Also, schools must add an online safety in lesson, using real-life examples for children to easily understand. More than that, Barangays should make a weekly reports about abuse easy and safe, and to ensure that victims are protected and supported—within this the government will continue to improve the laws, making sure that they are followed especially in some areas.

‎We know that technology can help with the innovations and creations— but it must used widely. Social media creators and providers must be held accountable for disseminating harmful contents and protecting young online users. Communities and Cities should organize forums, workshops, weekly reports, and even creative campaigns that speaks for the rights of every child. Let's not wait for another child to suffer. Protect them now, because every child deserves to grow up safe, strong and free— and that's starts within us.
